Iron-boosting green smoothie with spinach, spirulina, and blackstrap molasses

Iron-Boosting Smoothie Recipe for Low Iron & Ferritin

By Jen Cherewaty RAc, RTCMP6/23/2026

Boost Your Iron, One Sip at a Time

If you've been feeling tired, foggy, low energy or just had a heavy period and/or bloodwork that shows lower ferritin levels your iron levels might be whispering for attention.

This smoothie is one of my favourites because every single ingredient is pulling its weight to optimize iron storage levels and it's also delicious and nourishing.

Why Iron Matters More Than You Think

Iron is essential for carrying oxygen through your blood. When iron levels dip, even slightly, you can feel it — fatigue, brain fog, poor sleep, and that "running on empty" feeling that no amount of coffee seems to fix.

The key is pairing iron-rich foods with vitamin C (hello, lemon juice!) to maximize absorption. That's exactly what this smoothie does.

What's Inside and Why

Spinach & spirulina — two of nature's most concentrated plant-based iron sources

Blackstrap molasses — a single tablespoon contains a meaningful dose of highly absorbable iron, plus magnesium and calcium

Pumpkin & hemp seeds — rich in iron, zinc, and healthy fats to keep you satisfied

Lemon juice — vitamin C to dramatically boost iron absorption

Carrot & cucumber — gentle on digestion and loaded with antioxidants

Mixed berries — vitamin C, flavour, and anti-inflammatory support

Pure Paleo [Designs for Health] — clean protein to keep blood sugar balanced and energy steady

Smoothie Recipe to Boost Iron & Ferritin

Serves 1

  • ½ cup mixed berries

  • 1 cup spinach

  • ⅛ tsp spirulina

  • 1 TBSP hemp seeds

  • 2 TBSP pumpkin seeds

  • 1 TBSP lemon juice

  • 1 scoop Pure Paleo protein powder

  • 1 small carrot

  • 1 small cucumber

  • 1 TBSP blackstrap molasses

  • 3/4 to 1 cup water, unsweetened coconut water or almond milk

Blend everything together until smooth & enjoy immediately.

Consistency Is The Real Magic

One smoothie won't transform your iron & ferritin levels overnight but making iron-rich foods a regular, delicious part of your routine absolutely can. Your body knows how to heal. Give it the right tools, consistently, and watch how much better you feel. 🌿

Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine

Nutrition is just one piece of the puzzle. If low energy, fatigue, or brain fog have become your normal, acupuncture and Chinese medicine can help get to the root of your low iron and/or ferritin. Book a consultation and let's build a plan that's designed for you.
